Back in 1949, American Thread Co, put out their Star Book 60, titled Socks and Mittens.   This was issued as promotional material (patterns) for their Dawm Brand Wools.      Their introduction is so .. well ... 1949.   Here's the photo-journal of all the patterns in the book ...

6005 - Mens Cable Socks - 5 double pointed steel knitting needles no 13.
